As a licensed psychotherapist, I believe that mental health is essential for maintaining happiness, well-being, and a sense of security. While it may seem counterintuitive, seeking help is a courageous act, and showing vulnerability is a true sign of strength, not weakness.
As a therapist, I have worked with individuals of all ages and backgrounds in New York City. My approach as a therapist is framed by my background as a music therapist combined with elements of depth-oriented psychotherapy and traditional talk therapy. In my work I utilize elements such as dream analysis, free association, and cognitive restructuring. It is my understanding that fostering strong therapeutic relationships is at the forefront of successful psychotherapy work. Within my work as a psychotherapist, I apply a flexible approach to help my clients in whatever ways work for them. Clients find me playful and direct and value my authenticity.
I am Dr. Pamélla E. Terry. A licensed mental health counselor. I believe healing is possible when people feel seen, safe, and supported. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families during some of the most complicated seasons of their lives. I have seen what can happen when people are given the space to tell the truth about what they are experiencing without judgment. I have also seen what happens when people begin to recognize strengths in themselves that difficult circumstances caused them to forget.
Therapy with me is collaborative. I bring my clinical experience and training to the process, but you bring something equally important: your lived experience. You know what it feels like to live your life. Together, we work to understand the experiences, emotions, relationships, beliefs, and patterns that may be influencing where you are today. Our work may include helping you:
- Understand thoughts and patterns that keep you feeling stuck
- Process grief and difficult experiences
- Develop healthier ways of coping
- Build confidence and self-awareness
- Strengthen boundaries
- Improve relationships
- Reconnect with your strengths
- Clarify what you want for your future
I believe therapy should provide insight, but it should also help you create meaningful change outside the therapy room. I understand that culture, family, community, identity, responsibility, and life experience all influence how we understand ourselves. For that reason, culturally responsive care is an important part of how I approach this work. In doing so, I utilize modalities such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Family Internal Systems.
I have spent a majority of my training working across the lifespan from childhood to adulthood, and within family systems. I am trained in helping clients with stress and anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, family conflicts, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, and depression. Some of the individuals that I work with are in recovery from eating and substance-related disorders. My clients often face school and work avoidance and may find it difficult to do things they once enjoyed.
After graduating with my masters from Barry University in Miami, Fl, I moved to New York where I have been practicing for the past few years. I am a trauma-informed therapist who works with adults of all ages and stages to help reduce their mental health concerns. I work primarily with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and have a history of trauma. My goal is for my clients to work through their challenges, heal their trauma, and live their best lives.
